1. What Socratic Scholar is
Socratic Scholar ("the Platform") is an educational tool that coaches university students through refining a research question and drafting a research proposal. The Platform is strictly Socratic: it asks questions, critiques your work, and points to concepts. It will not write your proposal, essay, or thesis for you.
2. Your work stays yours
You retain full intellectual-property rights in the research questions, proposals, uploaded papers, notes, and any other original content you create on the Platform ("Your Content"). The Platform does not claim ownership of Your Content.
3. How we may use your data
To improve the Platform, we may use your interactions — including anonymised or aggregated question versions, tutor assessments, feature usage, and survey answers — for product improvement, research on tutoring effectiveness, and reporting to funders or academic partners.
Any external reporting will use aggregated or de-identified data only. We will not share the specific text of your research questions, proposal drafts, uploaded literature, or personal identifiers with third parties without your consent, except where required by law.
4. Privacy from other students
Every student account is isolated. Other students cannot see your sessions, proposal, uploaded papers, milestones, or profile. Platform administrators have limited visibility for support and aggregate reporting purposes as described in the Privacy Notice.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to (a) submit unlawful, infringing, or harmful content; (b) upload copyrighted material you do not have the right to use; (c) attempt to bypass the Platform's Socratic constraints or misrepresent AI output as unaided work in violation of your institution's academic-integrity rules.
You are responsible for complying with your institution's rules on the use of AI tools in assessed work.
6. No guarantees
The Platform is provided on an "as is" basis. AI responses may be incorrect, incomplete, or biased. The Platform is not a substitute for your supervisor. We make no warranty that the Platform will secure a specific academic outcome.
7. Account termination
You may delete your account at any time by contacting the administrator. We may suspend accounts that breach these Terms.
8. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of South African courts.
9. Changes to the Terms
We may update these Terms. When we do, we will bump the version and ask you to accept the new version the next time you sign in.
By checking "I accept" you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and by the Privacy Notice (POPIA).
